Sustainable Family Farming Futures: Exploring the Challenges of Family Farm Decision Making through an Emotional Lens of ‘Belonging’

This paper illustrates the importance of moving beyond an economic focus, and towards emotional one, to gain a more comprehensive understanding why farmers can be reluctant retire and/or pass their farm onto next generation. We report on two-phase qualitative study family decision-making processes in Northern Ireland, drawing 62 in-depth oral life history interviews with farmers, farmers’ spouses, successors. In attempt deeper aspects retirement succession processes, relationship place belonging, first phase this research we employed innovative ‘Work Talk’ method, whereby were conducted while shadowing, or some cases, co-working, land. The second responded restrictions arising from COVID-19 pandemic, involved remote telephone online members. revealed complex relationships between ‘longing for belonging’ attachment farm, challenges associated patrilineal farming structures, expectations identities, planning succession. impacts strained policy makers around support emerged as surprisingly dominant theme throughout interview process, suggesting need greater emphasis inform future rural development policies targeted sustainability farms.
